The Pug Mystique

What is it about pugs?
You're at the park and you see a person approaching with a furry friend on a leash. You instantly know, even at a considerable distance, the breed of that dog. There's that jaunty attitude in the gait; the pulling from the barrel chest; the wiggling Danish-shaped tail; and that "it's-great-to-be-a-Pug" grin. The Pug owner understands. Even the non-owner often understands. The Pug possesses a certain elan. The Pug has that je ne sais quoi which translates "I do not know what." It's not something easily put into words. Perhaps it's just the Pug mystique.
In a Nutshell ...
One could easily write an entire book on Pugs and many have done just that. There are hundreds of Pug books devoted to standards, health, care, breeding, temperament, etc. But what about the Pug mystique? This is an attempt to capture and describe the Pug Spirit. This comes from day-to-day observations of living with and loving four Pugs.
A Really Big Heart
Pugs bring a smile to your face each and every morning. They love life. They love their families. And when you live in a house with multiple Pugs, each one finds and works out his own role. One (generally the first and oldest) is the alpha. He or she takes their responsibilities quite seriously. In the case of our household, the second Pug has appointed himself the caretaker. He nurtures the others, including the alpha. Since the third and fourth are still technically in their adolescence period, they just want to have fun. Even though each Pug has his own unique personality, they all share one thing in common: They all have heart and guts and offer unconditional love.
It's the Little Things
Pugs love to cuddle. Often times, they will fall asleep in your arms, snoring softly (and sometimes not so softly). They love to kiss and do so with gusto. Pugs understand what you tell them and when you literally spell it out, they get that too. They learn commands and routines very quickly, but can adapt to changes. Pugs have a wonderful way of cocking their heads when they listen to you. They soak up the input and run with it.
And Speaking of Running
Pugs do enjoy their leisure time, but when it's time to play, they have boundless energy. And every Pug has his own unique gait: Dexter has sort of an island sway; Trevor has a distinctive trot in each step. Both Ian and Mackenzie have a wonderful wild mustang approach. They literally gallop all over the yard, hind legs flying out behind them.
A Sense of Humor
Pugs have a great sense of humor and love to play tricks on each other. Trevor will set up a diversionary tactic such as barking so everyone will run to the window. Then he grabs the bone or toy one of the others left behind. And they have fun by themselves: chewing on a bone, shaking their favorite stuffed animal, chasing their tail. They do everything in a big way.
Every Pug is Unique and Special
Trevor, our black Pug, is often seen sitting with part of his tongue peeking out his mouth. He says he just has more tongue than the average Pug boy. And when he rests, he does so on his back hoping to get his belly rubbed.
Dexter, our oldest, loves his neck scratched. When you do just that, his "flaps" (some people call them cheeks or jowls) curl up, he moans, and his eyes roll backwards. When he's had a tough day, he always appreciates a neck scratch. And even though Dexter probably wouldn't admit this, he loves to spend time in the kitchen while his mother cooks dinner. He is the sous chef.
Ian has a true cobby form and it's even more evident when he sits. Both front legs are bowed and his barrel chest protrudes. He has the slightest underbite, so you see just the lower fangs. For that, he has earned the title, "Admiral Ian." Ian is a wonderful mixture of little tough boy charm and lover .
Mackenzie is about the happiest Pug on the planet! Every day is an adventure. Anything left on the coffee table is a potential treat (especially Coca-Cola). Height and distance have little meaning. If you want to reach something, Mac's your man! He defies the laws of physics with his feats of agility. And then there's that wrinkle factor...
Pug Acres
Multiple Pugs work as a team. They stick together, run together, think up stuff together. And take care of each other. They are brothers and/or sisters to the core. But each one has his own special charm. It's a Pug thing. It's the Pug Mystique.
