You are at the park or driving down the street and you see someone walking their dog in your direction. Before they are in close proximity, you instantly recognize the breed of the approaching canine. There's a jaunty, plucky attitude in the gait, the familiar barrel chest pulling in the harness, the wiggling danish-shaped tail, and the "it's great to be a pug" grin. The pug owner and pug lover knows exactly what we're talking about.
The pug possesses a distinctive elan. The pug exudes a mystical je ne sais quoi which translates to I do not know what. It's not something easily put into words. So we call it the Pug Mystique.
One could easily write a book on pugs and many have done just that. There are hundreds of pug books devoted to standard, health, care, breeding, temperment, etc. But what about the Pug Mystique? This is an attempt to capture and describe the pug spirit and this comes from day-to-day observation of living with and loving four pugs.
Pugs bring a smile to your face each and every morning. They love life. They ardently love their families. Pugs possess a wonderful sense of humor and saavy. Pugs are smart, steadfast, and exceedingly brave. Pugs are self-starters - they believe in getting on with business . And they work so well within the family unit. And in the case of multiple pugs, each pug finds and works out his or her role within the pack.
Generally, the oldest and first to come into the family is the alpha. Dexter has been alpha without question since coming into the family. In the case of our household, the second oldest pug, Trevor, is the beta. Trevor nurtures, grooms, herds, and keeps watch over the others. Ian and Mackie, our third and fourth, respectively, emulate the roles of their elders. Ian has taken the post of second beta - particularly to his little brother. Mackie is definitely the baby in the family (and enjoys the perks associated with being the youngest), but emulates Dexter with leadership qualities. It's fascinating to observe the pug pack and amazing to see how they have worked out the kinks, as it were. If only our world leaders could communicate that well.
Pugs are described as big dogs in a little package. This is more true than you realize. Pugs encompass a big personality with unlimited charm, great wit, and a heart full of unconditional love. And all these wonderful qualities are packed into a toy-size cobby frame. You can call it miraculous or mystical. We call it the Pug Mystique.
