Pug Zen

Ah, round donut, round donut...

...I am looped in the holes of the donut...

...oh, donut love is a crooked thing...

...is no one wise enough...

to find out all that is in the donut.

PugSpeak's Trevor and the donut - a pug zen thing?

Our pug boy, Trevor, brought a spiritual mystery to our attention.Taking it at face value, we understand this mystical predilection could be a simple as a quirky desire to collect. Or is it? On the other end of the spectrum, could it be a form of Pug Zen?

As a pug puppy, Trevor took an immediate interest and fascination in toy stuffed donuts. Solid colors. Multi-colors. Small donuts. Medium size donuts. From the first, Trevor began placing the donuts in his crate. Stacking them neatly and creatively.

Understanding that he had an appreciation for donuts, his humans purchased more. Donuts for his birthday. Donuts for Christmas. Donuts for Easter. Donuts for Arbor Day. The collection grew gradually at first, then Trevor's donut fervor seemed to increase. Each time we presented him with a new donut, it quickly disappeared into his crate and became a part of the collection.

We began to notice another interesting aspect. Immediately after Trevor potties or eats a meal, he generally selects a donut from the collection, takes it to the couch, and meditates for a time. Often times, Trevor carries the donut from room to room, making little sounds. Sometimes, Trevor simply holds the donut and falls asleep.

We asked ourselves, "what does the donut represent to Trevor"? Could the donut represent all things coming full circle? Could the donut symbolize spiritual enlightenment through meditation and intuition? Could the donut represent a prophecy of things to come? We considered seeing if Trevor would make donut shapes from a plate of mashed potatoes, but thought better of it.

Some days, Trevor will take his donuts (several dozen now) out of his crate, then carefully organize and re stack them. The interior of his crate resembles a donut fort. And somehow, Trevor manages to squeeze himself inside and luxuriate inside a donut cocoon. We dub this pastime as communing with donuts. There may come a day when we will have to rent a log cabin or storage unit to house Trevor's vast collection.

We may never know the full meaning of the donut or how it speaks to Trevor. But we do appreciate and respect its importance. We suspect that Trevor has found his own enlightenment.
